| Confused Yet? Google Adsense TOS - Mixed Messages from the Official Google Blog |
Is Google Confused, or are there two sets of rules... On adsense TOS & Dollar Signs, a Commentrary. If you are a Google Adsense publisher, you probably know that getting the most out of your adsense in terms of visibility and click through rates while adhering to adsense TOS is a constant game of tweaking. Google's adsense blog is probably a good place to start if you are looking for some insights and tips from the source itself. Google's adsense blog publishes tips, strategies, webinars and other goodies on a regular basis, so on any other day we would definitely recommend checking it out and keeping abreast of the latest news... Today however, is not that day. Exhibit A - A couple of days ago, Google published a TOS "reminder", highlights below "2. Ads should be easily distinguishable from surrounding content. Similarly, you should not place an ad unit by a group of links that has identical colors and line spacing. Doing so may cause users to think the ad unit is content created by you. In this situation, we recommend using a different color for the ad titles or indenting the ad unit to help distinguish the ads from your own content. This screenshot shows an implementation that does not follow this guideline: "To make this point clearer, they even attached an illustration screenshot (of how NOT to place ads - *illustrations edited by us for emphasis): ![]() Now, right beneath that post is a post dated back to July with the following screenshot of how (YES) to optimize your adsense ad placement: ![]() Now dear readers, you tell us what's wrong with these pictures.... Click here for the official Google AdSense Blog on optimization techniques, and a better view of these screenshot guidelines... Exhibit B - To encourage new and less successful publishers, google features success stories and case studies that highlight the successful strategies other web sites have implemented to generate large revenues through the adsense program. Introducing the case study of OSTG : SourceForge.net "OSTG increased its income from international traffic with Google AdSense and AdSense link units"What is the highlight strategy used to gain these profits? Well, according to OSTG's Mike Rudolph, Vice President and General Manager: " Link units are relevant, potentially interesting to the user, and don’t stick out as ads. They help users get to the content they’re looking for and help advertisers get their information out there. "Link to the official google case study can be found here. What google is actually trying to say is don't confuse your visitors into thinking that google ads are part of your content... which makes good sense if you are looking to lend credibility to your site and brand. However, we think they could have done a better job of explaining this without adding to the confusion by sending out such a mixed message. Or, maybe, the rules are different for less trafficked and lesser performing adsense publishers, that just don't bring in the profits for google ... We'd love to hear your comments on this one!
