Google Mania Aftershock - some thoughts

It seems nowadays that all business savvy web marketers, online entrepreneurs and seo experts are so caught up in making their sites Google friendly, that the continued search for getting an edge on rankings and search results has resulted in somewhat uniform 'googalization' of the web.

We've all heard of google's complex mathematical indexing processes, optimizing our sites to include key word rich content, seeking high quality back links, scurrying to write articles and participate in article submissions and such. But have we taken a step back to see what impact this has created in today's virtual world?

For instance, you might have noticed that this has created an entirely new web market - article submission directories. Where in the past, clever strategies to keep visitors coming back for exclusive expert information would practically preclude site owners from publishing their articles in outside sites (excluding reputable magazines and news publications), today - this has all changed! To gain those valuable back links and sport our expertise, we submit our once exclusive research and conclusions to dozens and some to hundreds of different article repositories.

Another observation you may have made, and rightfully so, is the new link as a commodity phenomena. Since the more quality back links you have, the better you will fare in in search engine rankings, getting others to link to you has often resulted in complex risk/benefit analysis and negotiation. Think about it - what would you trade for a back link?

I could go on and on this topic, but the question remains: has this had a positive affect on the way our virtual world has developed?

In terms of information availability, mass article publishing has probably resulted in easier access to the masses of insider information and much sought after research. I would flag this as a positive affect. After all, that is what we want the internet to be, right? A free, easily accessible mass of information to get us what we need and when we need it, with as little effort as possible.

On the other hand, this has also led to a flooding of sorts, so many repetitive sources are popping up as authoritative experts every day (make money now, easy money making techniques, etc.) - at the top of many search results, Google, Yahoo, MSN & the sorts, so long as the entrepreneur behind it is somewhat savvy in SEO techniques and uses the system to his or her advantage.

Well, the revolution has begun a long time ago, and it's had a snowball affect on us all.
